Window, Door & Conservatory Maintenance

Modern windows and doors are designed to be low maintenance, and your Niddal guarantee provides protection against manufacturing defects and damage covered by the terms of your guarantee.

However, normal wear and tear and damage caused by everyday use are not covered.

With a little regular care and routine maintenance, you can help prevent problems, keep your windows and doors looking their best and extend their working life.

Important: Do not use solvent-based or abrasive cleaners on any Niddal products. Never use penetrating lubricants, such as WD-40 or similar sprays, on window or door hardware, as this may invalidate your warranty.

Niddal is a FENSA-registered company, giving you added peace of mind that your replacement windows and doors are installed in accordance with current Building Regulations requirements.

We work with recognised industry bodies and independent third parties that assess and verify our working practices, helping to provide customers with confidence in the quality of our products and services.

Caring for Your Windows & Doors

1

Frame Maintenance & Cleaning

PVCu and aluminium frames require very little upkeep. Wipe them regularly with a soft, damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent to remove dirt and grime. Avoid abrasive sponges, scouring pads and harsh chemical cleaners, as these can damage the surface and finish.

2

Moving Parts & Hardware

Keep your windows and doors operating smoothly by applying a few drops of light engineering oil, such as 3-in-1, to the appropriate moving parts once or twice a year. Hinges can loosen or become misaligned over time, but can usually be adjusted using standard household tools.

3

Metallic Door Fittings

Metallic door fittings are usually protected with a lacquer coating, meaning they need little polishing for several years. If the coating deteriorates, occasional cleaning and polishing may be required. Always remove fittings before polishing and avoid abrasive products or techniques.

4

Conservatory & Porch Roofs

Conservatory and porch roofs should be cleaned in a similar way to PVCu frames and glazing. Remove leaves, dirt and debris, and keep gutters and drainage channels clear. This helps prevent blockages and ensures rainwater can drain away properly and keeps your roof in good condition.

Looking After Your Glass

Glass Cleaning

Double-glazed glass can normally be cleaned using a soft cloth and a solution of mild soap and water. For heavier dirt and grime, most standard glass cleaners can be used, provided they are suitable for the glass surface.

Minor scratches may sometimes be reduced using jeweller's rouge or a suitable rubbing compound, but care should be taken with leaded glass. Excessive pressure can dislodge the lead from the surface of the glass.

Why Do Double-Glazed Units Mist Up?

If mist or condensation appears between the panes of glass, this is different from normal condensation on the inside or outside surface of the glass.

Condensation between the panes can indicate that the sealed unit has lost its airtight seal and may require attention or replacement.

If you notice misting between the panes of your Niddal windows or doors, please get in touch and our experienced team can advise you on the most appropriate solution.

Understanding Condensation

Internal Condensation

Replacing your windows with modern double glazing does not always resolve an underlying condensation problem.

Water vapour is naturally present in the air, and everyday activities such as cooking, showering, drying clothes and even breathing can increase humidity levels inside your home.

Good ventilation and sensible humidity control can help reduce condensation. If you are experiencing persistent condensation, please contact us for advice.

External Condensation & Energy-Efficient Glass

It is possible for condensation to appear on the outside of your windows under certain weather conditions. This can occur when moisture in the air forms as dew on a cold surface that has been exposed to a clear night sky.

With older or less energy-efficient double glazing, heat from inside the property could escape through the glass, keeping the external surface warmer and reducing the likelihood of external condensation.

Our energy-efficient double-glazed units provide improved thermal insulation, helping to prevent heat from escaping from your home. As a result, the external surface of the glass can become colder, and under certain weather conditions, dew may form on the outside.

Although it may look unusual, external condensation can actually be an indication that your windows are providing a high level of thermal insulation.
